The W. Craig Armington Memorial Scholarship Awarded Annually |
The first tower of what became known as the Beavertail Lighthouse was constructed in 1749, just the 3rd of the 11 lighthouses built along the Atlantic seacoast of the British colonies in North America. Since that time, the buildings and tower have served as a landmark and a guide for navigators passing through lower Narragansett Bay. Observed from the water, Beavertail’s powerful beacon light and fog signal devices have provided both warning and welcome through the services of dedicated keepers, scientists, inventors, and Lighthouse Service administrators. The Beavertail Lighthouse Museum Association (BLMA) was created to preserve and protect the site and to provide visitors with opportunities to learn about the lighthouse and those involved with it during its nearly 260 years of active use. The Scholarship Fund was established for high school seniors living in Jamestown, RI who have been accepted at a college or university and will begin studies in the fall. Each student selected will receive a $1,000 scholarship to be applied toward college tuition, books, or fees related to the courses of study. 2012 Application Details to be Announced- Spring 2012 |
