Karentz, a docent who works at the museum, built the model. It was made to exact
scale of 3/8 inch to one foot. The dimensions were provided by R. Davis of Middletown.
The buildings are made of plywood and each side of each building was scored with
an awl before assembly to simulate the brick construction. The tower has the exact
number of granite blocks. The windows and doors are computer generated and cemented
into the openings. The signs are reduced digital photocopies of the actual signs
at the lighthouse. The model sits on a base that is 4-ft square and is 28 inches
tall.

The
model was made over a three year period but he cannot estimate how many hours
he worked on it, since sometimes it lay untouched for months It was completed
this summer and donated to the museum. Varoujan says he undertook the project
just as a whim and only after he had the first building finished did he realize
it was larger than he intended it to be. As it neared completion, he knew he had
to give it away and the logical recipient was the Museum Association with a condition
it could be borrowed from the Association by other organizations for promotional
purposes.
